Our services

The Women’s Health Information & Support Centre (WHISC) is a charity dedicated to improving

When a woman walks in we will see them there and then. We offer services for every woman from a Listening Ear, to Counselling, Brief Crisis intervention to a Knitting Group and yoga and many more things in between.

What we do

Counselling

One-to-one counselling sessions are available for women over the age of 18 years. Our team of female counsellors are all members of the BACP.

Women’s Health Information & Support Centre offer one-to-one counselling sessions for women over the age of 18 years.

Our team of female counsellors are all members of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and have regular supervision. They are all fully qualified or in the last stages of training.

How Do I Get Counselling From WHISC?

Accessing our counselling service is a simple two step process:

  1. You will self-refer yourself into our counselling service. This can be by email, phone call or visiting our Bold Street premises.
  2. You will then be invited to attend an assessment/initial meeting which takes approx. 40 minutes. At this meeting we will explain what we offer, assess your needs, discuss what happens next, and explain our confidentiality policy. You can then discuss how you would like to proceed.
  3. If you proceed, your counselling sessions will be directed by yourself – the more your put into the experience, the more you are likely to gain from it.

Currently we are not taking new referrals into WHISC’s FREE Counselling service, the Acacia Counselling and Cherish services are open as usual for new referrals. The reason for this is to allow us  catch up on our waiting list of clients, reflect on clients needs for 2019 and pursue new charitable funding streams for WHISC to still be able to offer counselling free-of charge.

You can also continue to benefit from WHISC by making the most of our range of services from support groups to training.

For more information, please do contact us at WHISC on 0151 707 1826

What Is Counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy

It is a safe and confidential space to talk freely about your concerns without the fear of being interrupted, judged or criticised.

You will be supported to explore issues that may be personal or upsetting, by trained and experienced professionals.

You decide which matters you would like to discuss with the counsellor, and you can do this at your own pace.

Counsellors will not direct you, but will help you to develop your own understanding of your problems and ways in which to move forward.

Reasons why clients may approach our counselling service include depression, self-harm, anxiety, loss, low self-esteem, stress, and family/relationship problems. However, if the counsellor feels that there is an alternative service which is more specific to your individual needs, she will be able to help you to access this.

What Good Does Counselling Do?

Research shows that counselling can be as effective in treating depression and anxiety as medication.

1 in 4 women will approach treatment for depression during their lives

54% of people know someone who has been helped by counselling.

WHISC are on the Counselling Directory. Visit the directory for a comprehensive database of UK counsellors and psychotherapists, with information on their training and experience, fees and contact details.
