As we approach Easter weekend, the sun seems to be making an effort and I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling more positive because of this.
Sometimes, though, sunshine isn’t enough. Did you know that Mind state that a quarter of us will be affected by mental health issues this year? So where do you turn to when you are affected?
Well, a good many of us turn to the NHS. However, the NHS doesn’t always provide the service we might like or need. For example, it is not unusual for the 18 week waiting time for mental health appointments to be missed. In a report published by Mind, it stated that 1 in 10 people have to wait over a year to receive treatment.
Underfunding has also caused considerable problems with NHS service provision. The BMA have stated, ‘the chronic underfunding of mental health services has left some of the most vulnerable people in society without the care and support that they desperately need.’
But, if things aren’t quite as you hoped with the NHS, here in Liverpool we are lucky to have WHISC – who not only offer counselling and support groups for us women but also lots of activities to help with our wellbeing.
You see, despite the popular misconception, mental health isn’t all about personality disorders and depression – sometimes its about less than the ideal amount of peace, calm, relaxation and plain simple fun. So, if you feel you’re not getting all that you need, why not check out this website to see what is on offer?
There is so much to choose from! Maybe the new Get Crafty group starting next week will be your thing? Or maybe you fancy shaking it all about at the Belly Dancing classes? Or, if you fancy just chilling out, then maybe a relaxing massage or our Back To Life Soul Spa will be just the ticket?
However, if you don’t find what you’re looking for, then why not come to one of our Mental Health Drop-Ins? These are available on Wednesdays, 1-2.30pm and 3.30-4.30pm, and offer information about what’s on offer from other local agencies – not just WHISC.
But, most important of all, remember that WHISC will be glad to see you no matter what your mental health – you don’t need to wait until life gets on top of you!
